Okay to start off, I'm an extreme over anaylzer...
I drove my car to school without any problems and parked it without any problems. I haven't had any problems until today...
I was going to go to the store. I started my car and put it in reverse, but it not only didn't reverse it didn't even move. I even took my foot off the pedal while it was in reverse and it didn't move at all. My driveway is brick and pretty steep so that worried me. I then put it in neutral, then in drive, and then in reverse again and then it worked. I tried again several hours later and it worked. My driveway is very narrow and brick, so I was wondering if I just parked in a weird position, but that didn't make sense.
I'm a new driver and know nothing about cars. But it really worries me. Do you think it was just stuck in gear? Do you think this is the first sign that something is wrong with my transmission? One time deal kind of thing?
I'm really sorry for being such a noob. I just want to make sure nothing is seriously wrong before I travel a lot.

Hi, Moved thread to transmission section and this site's trans specialist should be by soon.
Just notes/suggestions for now for a new driver: If parking spot is extreme just how extreme is it? Hard to describe but if really steep it could be a factor and mean REALLY steep.
Know that surface and narrow doesn't matter to the car, the angle it's on could. Do set parking brake while in "N" to hold well before going to park really helps and always recommended anyway. Plain "P" alone really shouldn't be counted on to hold a vehicle on a grade especially.
Will need to know fluid level checked as per owner's manual instructions.
General for you being new to car and driving: Read suggested service intervals now almost an 11 year old car check what is suggested for fluid changes and other maintenance that it's all up to date. If unknown may want to do certain things and start a history on it for best chances of dependable "driving a lot" as you said. Be ready anyway in any vehicle. Anything can break down with or without a warning.
Know how to change a tire with the spare, check fluids etc. Know how to check tire pressure including spare yourself not relying on features the car might have to warn you and have a pressure gauge for tires in the car.
Think about in not in one already joining a motor club like AAA. Many discounts alone make those worth it even without a car problem or needing a tow.
Seriously > Read owner's manual! Nobody does but it's full of useful boring info. The paper one it comes with or find it on line but suggests you have it at the ready. Batteries don't go dead in paper books!
Your engine size should be listed on a sticker under the hood. Learn it as at some point you'll be asked,

Hello,
First thing you may want to do is check your fluid level, this trans has no dipstick so it will have to be taken to a trans shop and put on the lift to check fluid level. Has it happened anymore since your post? Gary

have the vehicle scanned for codes - even if lights are off it FREE.

Thank you for all of the info Tom! And you're entirely right. How would you suggest I learn how to change a tire? Videos? Do it once just to make sure?
The driveway isn't insanely steep, but it's very unlevel.
I did just get the car inspected and I got an oil change. It's in great condition and very few miles. I'm hoping it lasts a long time.

Hello Gary! No it has not. It's been working fine. I got the oil changed two months or so ago. Don't they check all of it when they do that? Do you think I should go and get it checked out?

OK - This trans need help to check level as I suspected but wasn't sure - Gary is.
Codes - many place except I think California code readings are free at Autozone and place like them - they advertise that.
Knowing how to do common things is side topic. Don't be the one in a total jam smart phone or not and not know some basics.
Just a tire change could happen anytime and in a terrible location. Owner's manual should take that step by step and again on any cover for the spare. Shockingly (did a ton of road calls) spares are usually found flat from never being checked! Check stuff like that or nobody else does (maybe) unless you specially ask.
Know when critical services and maintenance things should be done. Should coolant be flushed and replace now? When was it done last if at all or do you know? Things like that.
OK - I don't think the parking is the issue. If it is found low and at just the wrong angle that could cause a problem but if found low they I say you need to know why! It shouldn't consume any normally is the real point and know which things do consume some and which ones found low (assorted fluids) don't or indicate a problem lurking you can avoid being stuck,

most auto parts stores will scan codes for FREE - autozone, advance , orielys, auto parts stores are a few write down any codes they retrieve.
let us know before they sell you anything.

Kev2: It been made ILLEGAL to do readings for free in some places that also sell parts - just know that so all parts of even one US state do not allow it.
That's all fine as they were busted for pushing parts with codes found that were NOT the problem.
Original Poster - check in your area - just if they do don't let them instantly talk you into parts to buy,

It's only illegal in California due to emission rules.
