2004 Mazda 3 2.3L automatic - weird problem with 4rd gear Sign In

Hi, I have a 2004 Mazda 3, 2.3L automatic with 136.000 miles. It has regular oil changes and it was always well maintained. Oh, and I got the car when it had 127.000 about 3 months ago.
A couple of weeks ago, while I was driving on a busy highway, the car shifted (while it was on Drive) to 4rd and the car wasn't accelerating. When I floored the gas the rpm when to 6-7 in an instant and the car still didn't accelerate more than just a little bit. I hit the break for an instant, then the gas again and the car started accelerating again. This situation happened a couple more times and I solved the same way.
2 days ago the situation got worse; Now, if I'm driving at 30-40mph and the car switches to 4rd, the engine starts vibrating and the car doesn't accelerate. To solve this I change to manual, switch back to 3rd, accelerate a little more, like up to 45-55, and then I can switch to 4rd normally...
I'm going to take the car to a mechanic but I'd like to have a little more information before that. Do you have any idea what's going on? Thank you!

If youre taking it to a shop, they should be able to test and diagnose way better than we can through a forum. We cant test line pressures and watch live data over the interwebs. Dont be afraid to get a couple opinions on it. Post the diagnosis here if you want and we might be able to give you some ideas.

Doesnt hurt to check the trans fluid level and condition. Is your check engine light on? If it has stored trouble codes (can be read for free at some parts stores), could help point in the right direction.
