2004 Jetta acceleration / Tranny problem? Pls help!! Sign In

My 04 Jetta's check engine light has been on for a while now with no issues. Few weeks ago it wouldn't accelerate while when I went to merge on the freeway, almost like it wasn't shifting gears (it's an automatic). Then it started shuddering and the check engine light was flashing. Took it to the mechanic, they said it was showing a misfire code so they replaced the coil pack and sparkplugs / wires. Ran fine for about a week, then same thing happened. This seems to only happen when it's really cold. Biggest problem is when I try and go uphill, its like the car wont shift into 4th gear, just red-lines. It's still showing a misfire code (this time in cylinder 4). Could this be a tranny related issue, or a computer problem?? We also checked the tranny fluid, and it was fine just a little burnt (Mechanic didn't seem concerned - which seems odd to me). Any ideas??
Thanks in advance!

Is the transmission slipping or it is not going into 4th? Need to have someone monitor shift commands. Also need to find out what your engine problems are with the check engine light being on due to the fact that engine running issues will affect the operation of the transmission.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

the check engine light is your friend do not ignore it.

First you should rethink your 'mechanic' - was this a VW dealer? THe image you paint does not instill confidence.

You will need to diagnose the issuee, first you would retrieve the codes ALL codes, yes the transmission will also set codes.
Codes will affect all aspects of performance - power, A/C, shifting, gas milage etc. THe flashing CEL is a priority as it will get expensive if ignored,

SUGGESTION: get the system scanned - post the codes here If you have questions.

Taking a SWAG -A fuel issue and a technician taking short cuts-
