2002 Chrysler 300M; 3.5L, 100,000 miles, automatic trans Sign In

I have recently come across a problem with my rpm's. For example, I will be driving on the highway and have to make a move where I accelerate and when the rpm's go up on acceleration they don't go back down. Basically they stay up at 4000 or 5000 rpm. Leaving the engine sounding like when you leave a manual car in first and don't shift to second when needed. What can this problem be and what would be the cheapest way to fix it? I am on a real tight budget and cannot afford a mechanic right now. I appreciate the help and I sure hope someone can identify the problem for me.

Sounds like a solenoid problem. Are you getting a 'Check Engine Light'. The trans. controller will store a trouble code, but you'll need to have a trans. shop look at it. At what speed are you going when the rpm is 'stuck' at 4000
-5000 rpms? I forgot to mention that nearly all transmission shifting functions, nowadays, are electronically controlled. Engine management issues can cause shifting errors, but this particular one sounds more like the trans, itself.
