2001 Dodge Caravan with a 2.4 engine and a 3 speed transmission with no overdrive. It feels like it it slips into neutral when taking off and shifts fine after take off. Was changing a tire on the front drivers side yesterday and the tire spun freely while tightening the lug nuts and the passenger tire was still on the ground. Is this something I can fix my self ?? I recently replaced the CV Joint because I was hearing a weird rubbing noise.

You should be able to spin one front tire if it is off the ground and and the other isn't. This is due to the design of the differential in the final drive of the transaxle.

How is the transaxle fluid level and condition?

Yes. I was hearing a noise when driving down the road. It acts up after it drives a while and worse in the summer. It is weird because the transmission shifts fine and only acts up on the take off.

If you have one tire on the ground and the other in the air and the vehicle is in park, you shouldn't be able to spin that tire.

Something is wrong with one of those axles or there is some type of problem going on in the final drive.

Can you move (push) the vehicle with it in park?

Something is wrong with the info we are getting here. If that wheel actually spun under the circumstances he describes, the car would be dead in the water and never move at all.

I'm suspecting he has both wheels off the ground.

one wheel was off the ground and the other on the ground. Is there any way I didn't get the CV Joint seated right. Its like the drivers side is not turning on its own during initial acceleration and the passenger side is doing all the work. I even feel a shutter/grind sometimes and like a transmission slip coming from the drivers side after it warms up (all on take off). The car doesn't roll when in park, but there is a clank when I put it in reverse.

I'm afraid that just doesn't add up. If what you're saying were true, the truck would never, ever move under power. Gear connections don't just vanish and come back.

Okay. I have been driving it like that for 8 months since I put the CV joint on. It shifts fine after initial take off. I drive the highway at 70 mph everyday for 20 minutes. I guess until it finally breaks down, it can't be diagnosed. I am assuming it is not some sensor because the van is equipped with it's own on board computer that gives codes by turning the key three times on and off. Thanks for your help.

Your van doesn't give TCM codes that way. You need a high end scanner to get those.

My issue is that when I try to shif it into Drive, it seems to be stuck in Neutral until after it warms up for quite a bit of time. Once the Drive does kick in, it's fine as long as I make sure the shifter is in the propper slot. I know there is a small leak somewhere.Crazy
