2000 Jeep GC - Park rolls and no reverse Sign In

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - 4.0 - Auto - 70,000 mi.
My GC will roll when in park and the reverse will not work. You can feel it go into reverse but it does not move right when you press the gas. I have an extended warranty so I took it to the dealer. The first thing the warranty co asked was if i did the 60000 mi maintenance. I did not but did a 4x4 fluid maintenance. They now want $400 to tear down the tranny and they are going to send out an inspector to check to see if the issue was maintenance related. The dealer said there was metal particles in the pan and he believes the torque converter needs replacing. He said the tranny needs to be rebuilt at a price of 2600 - 3000. I asked which codes were produced and he said there were no codes. I have a funny feeling about this place and I would like some elses opinion. Please let me know what the problem could be and if you think I should get a rebuild or take it somewhere else. Also what could be the problem?
Thank you very much

Thats standard procedure with all warranty companies.
The always ask for maintenence receipts.
The have to get your authorization for disassembly (i hate the word teardown) to the point of failure to verify what caused the failure. If its determined that it was from neglect and/or lack of maintenence, they will decline the repair. You will be on the hook then for the $ to "teardown" and if you decide not to repair it,you have a transmission in a box basically. So you have to be prepared to pay the entire bill should they decline repairs.
So ,decide if you can afford the rebuild price or replacement cost before any "teardown" is done.

First, check to see what the exact maintenence interval is for your vehicles transmission. Is it every 30 k ?
I'm not familiar with this model.
I doubt its a maintenence failure but if it does have an interval of 30k,they may decline it if you cant prove maintenence has been done.Metal in the pan is not a good thing. As far as letting you know what it is,that has to be determined after disassembly.

They also will do whats cost effective for them.In other words, they will do a cost comparison,Repair/rebuild verses replacement unit.Whichever is less expensive for them. They spend their money like you and i spend ours.
Sometimes, they would rather have a replacement unit installed because it comes with a better warranty.Repairs/rebuilds are usually warranteed for 12 months or 12 k miles.Reman units are usually 3 years/50k.
If you dont feel comfortable with this serivce facility, take it elsewhere. But the warranty company will still require the same thing.
The inspectors are independant people.they work for separate companies. The warranty companies hire them to come out to inspect. They are all ASE Certified technicians .The are fair. You may not agree with them at times but they call it like it is.I have known many over the years, all were ok IMO.

Keep us posted
Good luck

Jim
