Once engaged in drive, my transmission works perfectly/smoothly. However, from park, reverse, or neutral when shifting into drive, it takes a long time for it to actually go into 1st gear. For a while I was able to drop down to first, rev up the engine, and it would engage. The problem has definitely been worsening as of recent. The transmission fluid has been flushed/changed twice. There have been no problems with it once it is actually engaged and shifting on its own. I guess I'm just looking for ideas on how to proceed with this. The car has around 99,000km on it. Another part of the problem is that I am stationed overseas, and I have limited knowledge of auto mechanics. I am hesitant to take my car to a local mechanic who will probably look to make the most money possible by charging me for a new transmission. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, so thank you in advance.
