1998 jetta froward in in neutral and reverse after rebuild Sign In

hi just a lil backgound, im a young certified auto tech with not much experience on auto transmissions, here is my problem

i have 1998 jetta with the 01m automatic transmission, it was working fine, aside from a loud bearing noise that been the reason for dropping it. long story short, i changed all the bearings including the one way clutch, found some friction plates that where going out, so i replace them too, also i cleaned the valve body, but it didnt work again. the transmission seems to want to move forward in all gears even in neutral and reverse, while in reverse if i rev uf the car it will jeark and change to reverse but something sound weird to me, also if i let go the gas it will stop and star moving forward again. so next i dropped the pan and clean all the valves in the valve body again and put new filter and fluid, i found some verry small metal falkes and also more black stuff on the magnet, i didnt give to much importance to it and i cleaned again, and it look like it was gonna work, it did move backwards on reverse at first slowly without reving it up, but as i add more oil transmission start acting exactly the same again, im sure low/ reverse clutches where good but that black stuff and mettal flakes on fluid make me thing something is not good and one of the clutch pack is stock or maybe welded together by this time, plz im verry comfuse and i leally want to learn all i can about transmissions, any help will be verry apresiated...... plz help me Unimpressed

Certified - Good for you. Knowing transmissions in full is near impossible with changes, updates and a zillion different ones so most who do them do just trans work as it's enough by itself.

You are finding debris now so things are near certainly broken that probably don't even come with a regular rebuild kit.

Now since I think this will require a total tear down I have to ask do you have the tools and place to lay out parts, clean them, time to check everything off car and so on?

Anything can be done with the right info and tools plus assorted parts that may not be in stock new or available so a used core may be needed and so on.

It's a long read - hit "view all" to see entire thread on one underway now at this site. Incredible details matter............

Now what do you want to do with this one?

thank man, im currently working on my backyard, i bearly have like 2 years experience after my graduation, but i love to learn new things and transmissions look very difficult, and i have to tell you im very atracted to hard stuff xp, i dont know why. This transmission rebuild has help me to understand them better, i already knew all the basics from college, but by trobleshooting this one i have learned alot more.

i have the tools and the space, and im planning on dropping it again soon so i can have a closer look to all the clutch packs, expecially the ones for reverse. the clutch packs that are applied for reverse are b1(low/reverse) and k2(reverse clutch drum), ill be putting more attencion to those,my guess is that eather a burned clutch pack, with all the metal plates fused, or some how stuck together or something like that.

ill be posting back my findings thax for the quick reply Wink

Back some: This was working fine until you replaced bearings and parts. Stuff happens. I don't but others may have some highly detailed info w pics + diagrams of the order of plenty of assorted parts.

You just said you are working in your back yard? Does that mean out in the open or what? I think you are headed for a total dismantle of this trans to even know what will be needed. If this is to be sprawled all over a back yard this isn't going to work out. If that's the case can you do this back at your school you went to?

Need a good plan of attack and access to any special tools (without a doubt) that will be required,

T

Re: 1998 jetta froward in in neutral and reverse after rebuild Sign In

I'm the one (marinegrunt) who's currently rebuilding my first transmission. I'm not a professional mechanic just a diy guy. When I first tore into the transmission I thought I found what caused the problem. I broken pump. I completely disassembled everything and looked everything over. I thought I had found all that was wrong and was ready to put everything back together. I did a dry fit and ended up finding some other parts that needed fixed.

When I first dropped the pan I didn't have any metal flakes, just some sludge. If you drop the tranny, which it sounds like you definitely have to do, you really need to go through each and every part. Almost with a magnify glass. Being that this was my first time, and yours too, we don't know exactly what to look for. It may look okay to us but, in all actuality, it may be a bad part. When one part goes many times it will affect another part, and then another, and so on.

Like Tom said, get a nice clean work area to lay all the parts out. Take plenty of pictures along the way. I've had to wait on parts to come in the mail a few times so it's easy to forget where one little part goes after a few days.

If you inspect everything you will eventually find the cause. Like I said before, this is my first one but was able to figure out what probably happened to cause my tranny failure.

There are some great mechanics on this site and are very helpful. They have saved my @ss numerous times.

Not sure how much help I can be, but if you have any questions, just post. Someone will be able to help.

One other thing. Make sure you purchase a rebuild manual before you start. It gives step by step with pictures. It will make reassembly so much easier.

yeap yeap, i already had the manual since the beginin Wink and finally i got some time to dissambling it, and my theory was rigth, the k1 clutch drum didnt have enoght cleareance, k1 clutch drum is unly apply trou all the froward gears, there for i had forward movement all the time even in neutal and reverse, all i have to do is get some thiner steel plates so ill have ther right clearease... ( this cluch pack is complicated it has some plastics that get in the way of the friction disc splines, but not in the steel plates, ill be posting photos so you'll can see what im talking about)

now ima get it all apart and look for where the lil metal flakes came from, and the lil sluge, my best guess.... b1 low reverse friction disc/ steel plates were damage while testing it, because it was tring to move forward all the time.... still ima visual check the rest of the tranny
