the reverse dont work right away. u got to rev the motor up a bit then will kick in. and the drive gear dont shift right away untill its warmed up. then the transmission works fine until u shut it off for awhile then start it up it goes back to the samething

Bet a fluid and filter change (synthetic) would improve this quite a bit,

its got 217550 miles on it. it dont slip or nithing just wont shift right away

That's amazing miles if orig on that trans! I was guessing that either or both is happening - The fluid may have gotten sticky in valve body until warm and or the front pump isn't building up pressure well with wear and newer oil would be faster when cold.

It's been my experiece that just the new fluid is a good solvent by itself and that property of ATF gives up over time and miles - oh and heat also,

i have a 1998 dodge neon 4 cylinder automatic trans. with about 217,000 miles on it.i replaced pan gasket and filter.car shifts fine from 1st to 2nd but will not shift to 3rd until it is warmed up good and i have to put shifter i neutral and raise rpms and put back in drive and it will shift to 3rd.trans. shifts from 3rd back to 1st at stop.when trans. is cold it will not shift to reverse unless you rev engine and then after a little while it slams into reverse.fluid is fine and no burned smell,what could be the ploblem and is there something i can do to repair myself ?
