1998 Civic, Low RPMs at Idle

Hello,
I am a novice and my 1998 Honda Civic with a 1.8L and 200K on it is having issues when I am at a stop (red light, stop sign, etc). The RPMs drop very low and the car starts to shake. It also sometimes has issues accelerating from a stop.
I have a friend of a friend who is an apprentice mechanic and took it in to diagnose it. He says it needs a new transmission. I realize that 200K is a lot of miles on a car to even think about spending the $ to replace a transmission but I have enough to pay for that but not enough for a downpayment on a new car nevermind paying monthly payments.
Do you feel (obviously without diagnostic tools) that these symptoms could mean needing a new transmission and if so, is 500 for a used transmission with 100k on it and asking for $650 more for labor reasonable?

Not enough info. Std or automatic? If standard I doubt trans is causing stalling if clutch disengages fully. About same with automatic, trans in N shouldn't be involved. Second opinion before you do anything is my suggestion,

OK - essentially the auto trans is not involved with engine if in Neutral so if this car can still stall in Neutral does it want to move if you take your foot off the brake?
At some miles like this some oddball things can happen. It's just unlikely to me to be the trans causing a real low idle (my guess) such that it wants to stall/shake.
This is more likely the computer unable to maintain proper idle speed with getting bad info from the engine and sensors. It still could need trans work or replacement on top of the problem but really think this is engine only so far. Get codes and their #s and post them - it has to have something to say,

I'm with Tom on this one. If it's shifting fine I find it hard to believe that it's the transmission. The transmission shouldn't really effect engine performance and your problem sounds like it would be something to do with the engine. Possibly the IAC. I'd try cleaning the throttle body first. When's the last time it had a tune up? New plugs, wires, etc? There's no way I'd do anything to the tranny without looking at engine performance first.
