Search Auto Parts Search 1996 cavalier lost 5th gear and reverse Sign up here!   Email This Post Auto Repair Home>> Automotive Repair>> Transmission Problems idanderso New User Dec 22, 2012, 10:46 AM Post #1 of 3 (1730 views) 1996 cavalier lost 5th gear and reverse Sign In i relpaced my original transmission in my 96 cavalier Z24 last year with a used one ( approx. 90,000km on it ) along with a new clutch, since then, some minor grinding has occurred. i was backing up the other day and was cut off by another driver, in panic , dumped the clutch and stalled, when i went to reverse after starting again, car went forward noticed there was now a lot of play with the shifter, very loose in every gear. driving forward 1st through 4th is fine, when shifting into 5th, it gears down to 3rd. could it be a linkage problem? your help would be very appreciated Discretesignals Ultimate Carjunky / Moderator Dec 22, 2012, 11:16 AM Post #2 of 3 (1718 views) Re: 1996 cavalier lost 5th gear and reverse Sign In You should visually inspect the shift cables at the transaxle and at the shifter lever assembly. Maybe a cable grommet fell apart. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved. Since the problem happened after a stall. I would have a helper go thru all the gears verifying the all the levers were moving from one gear to another and then stopping in the neutral position.....
