I recently acquired a used 1994 Dodge Caravan. Automatic, with over 130,000 miles on it. I am no car expert--but here is what I know.

When we test drove it, all hte gears seemed to be off by one--except Park. Reverse was in N, Neutral was in D, and so on. didn't seem to be a problem because it seemed consistent enough. However, now, the gears seem to slip--while driving! Drive can be anywhere from the Drive position, to the Low position, or not found at all until I jiggle the shifter a little bit. I asked my friend if she had had Transmission problems, she said there was a leak--I tested for a leak, I didn't see anything. And the fluid level has remained at a good level. I think there is a connection problem somewhere--but I'm not sure, and I don't want to take it into a shop until I have an idea of what might be happening.

So, here's my question(s):

What could be loose? and ball-park figures--how much should I expect it to cost to fix? (getting in there, finding the problem, and fixing it)

Thank you so much for your time.

Bet the trouble is right at the transmission where it gets a pivot bar moved to select gears and Park.

You may be able to see this with a helper doing the shifting (engine off) and see if the cable, case and casing looks well fastened and a nut probably to a shaft that goes into the transmission. If there's anything wobbly there it could be a matter of tightening a bolt or nut or perhaps replacement of the cable. This pivot should be on top of trans on driver's side. It's tight quarters underhood and you may not be able to see it without removing something. Not sure.

DO use your parking brake as you can't trust just the park position to hold the vehicle and really never should just rely on that.

It's worth a look and might be simple but there's no way to tell what or how much$$ at this point,

T
