Ok my truck has had this transmission problem for a while and I cant get a good answer on what I need to do to fix it. It has 230k miles on the odometer but no clue if that is right. It started one day when I was hauling some animals to the butcher and a tire trailer blew out. Since that time the truck will sometimes shift into the 4th and 5th gear but sometimes wont. Also when it starts oou right it will shift gears fine but then after about 20 minutes of driving just drop down to 3rd even while im going 50. However sometimes it will go weeks without a problem. A couple things I have noticed when it does this the speedometer will be jumping all over the place and the brake light will come on. I have quit using it to drive at higher speeds (pretty much never over +45) and it works fine but I would like to fix it if possible.

5th gear? 4L60E or 4L80E are 4 speed transmissions.

They are both electronic, so if you lose power to the transmission solenoids, that transmission defaults into 3rd. Could also be a VSS issue because the engine computer needs to know what the vehicle speed is to operate the transmission properly. Any trouble codes stored in the engine computer?

Could be an ignition switch problem, problem in the fuse block, or wiring issue also. You need to monitor the voltage on the pink wire at the transmission connector while the problem is happening and VSS signal input to the engine computer to see what is going on and give you direction on finding out where the problem is.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
