4 cylinder Mercury Topaz, first of all I know nothing about cars and all my info is from the internet.

Essentially, I was driving around just fine the other day when out of nowhere my speedometer stopped working altogether and my car dropped to first gear. Immediately after, it stopped shifting and I had it parked. I looked online and read that it might be a speed sensor issue, so, I go to replace it. I pop the sensor on with no trouble in the exact way the other was and my issue was partially alleviated, now my speedometer won't go past the thirty mph point (It struggles to get there and I'm usually going around 55 at that point) and after a short amount of time driving around town, the speedometer starts declining until it hits 0 and I can't shift again without letting the car cool off for about 2 hours.

If it helps at all, the car shifts into second at the 11 mph mark and third at the 19 mph mark. I have not been able to get it to shift beyond third gear. I have kept up with flawless maintenance and this car gave me no troubles until this instance. I have replaced all transmission fluid, have no visible leaks, and have replaced the speed sensor. However, there is a new burning smell that I am unable to pinpoint. All my fluids are fine though.

Probably time to take it to a transmission shop and have them take a look.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I ran into this once on a temp there is a drive gear that drives the sensor if you take the sensor out and shine a light you should be able to see the teeth damaged on the gear. Unfortunately you have to gut the transmission to get at the gear.

but you can pull out the sensor and check and confirm that is the problem by your self without having to pay a shop.
