It has a 6 cyl 4.0 with 175,000 miles on it. I'm not sure if the problem is with the transmission or not... When I park it, sometimes it won't start again. I have to keep moving the gearshift into park until it finally starts (which can be 20-30 minutes sometimes ) Other times it'll start with no problems. Any ideas as to what this could be? Is it possible there a sensor in the transmission that isn't recognizing that it is in park? Thanks for the help. Try and see if it will behave starting in neutral. Duralast / Neutral Safety Switch Part Number: CR412 Price: $229.99 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just checked on the switch if correct that's an insane price so let's hope it's a connection or adjustment possible. Get a test light. Power from key with start request is routed thru switch and won't pass on to trigger starter unless in Park or Neutral - duh. This (if correct) is way2expensive IMO so test away. It appears that the hole for a mounting screw is oblong which could turn some for adjustment. It could be linkage that's worn too? Does indicator in vehicle point directly at the spot you are in or does it seem off, too loose - anything? Graphics above were for a 4X4 - might be different for a 2WD. It's an important feature of course. Watched a Jeep product no less fly off a lift in gear with a failed switch when I shop I was doing something else at a tech reached in the window to start it and it was in drive - took off and smashed into the wall! Had anyone been in front of it, it would have been game over! That of course failed the other way - would start in any position and NOT why that vehicle was at the shop at all. Still nobody should try to start a vehicle, tech or not without being behind the wheel - stuff happens. Note: Vehicle frequently go into fast idle when just started especially cold to cover any flaws of initial start. The whole trouble could be an ignition switch or wiring issue and not this so checking is imperative. Get help with this if needed as it's too important. Right now yours is just not starting but if a flaw can do that it could fail as mentioned above also!
