1991 Grand Am Transmission Slippage

1991 Grand Am Transmission Slippage Sign In

I have a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am with automatic transmission. The engine is 2.5L four cylinder. The car has a little over 100,000 miles.

The problem has been developing for the last half year. The transmission would "clunk" pretty bad when I put it into drive and also when it would shift. (its a 3 speed transmission). I was told that changing the transmission filter would maybe help, so I changed that. I didn't do a complete flush though.

After the filter was changed the "clunk" was gone but it started shifting kind of goofy, especially between 1st and 2nd gear. Nothing too bad, but noticeable. This problem didn't get any worse for about 4 months.

Just the other day I drove 100 miles on the interstate at 75 mph, came to a stop sign, then hit the accelerator and it wouldn't go for about 3 seconds. After the 3 seconds its like the transmission finally "catches" and it will go. I checked the transmission fluid and its at an acceptable level. This problem is continuing and its kind of scary driving it because of its hesitation, especially when at an intersection.

Anyone have any ideas? any repair over $500 and i'm pretty sure it won't be worth fixing and she will become acquainted with our tree grove.

Sounds to me like the tranny is on its last leg and either time for a rebuild or park it in the tree grove with the other casualties. Be sure to check back on here though. There are some professional mechanics that will be able to give you better info than I can.

I agree, sounds like it needs a line pressure check done on it by a transmission shop. It is probably needing to be overhauled. The 125C also has a TV cable that has to be adjusted properly or it will cause harsh delayed shifting or shift flaring which can burn up clutches and bands.

I'd call 22 years a damn good service life for this trans. You've done well to keep this car going long after most of its brethren went to the crusher long ago. If you think this car is worth saving, definately check the TV cable adjustment closely and a line pressure check of the trans after knowing that good would be worthwhile. I think the damage has been done, and it may be hard to get a suitable replacement due to its age. This could be rebuilt, just depends on your level of tooling and knowledge plus if the car is worth the fix or not.

The 125C was/or is a great tranny. The only pattern problem they had was the lock up solenoid causing stalling coming to a stop. I think its cast iron valve body had a lot to do with it's longevity among other things.
