My transmission was an automatic with overdrive. I think it is a 4 spd auto. Anyway, the tranny will shift into R, N, 1st and 2nd, but after that it will shift back into N. When I am driving along it will start in 1st then shift to 2nd, and when the car would normally shift into third it will shift into neutral. If I rev it up the car will shift back into 2nd. I am told the solenoid probably went out and will need to be replaced, but not sure where it would be or how to get a hold of one. I do not want to get a new car and would rather fix this if possible myself. Is there anything I can do?

I think its in the trans pan where the filter is .....but I would get a diagnostic scan to be sure thats the problem.
