1990 Honda Civic LX sedan transmission issue at cold Sign In

Hi,

I have a 1990 Honda Civic LX sedan with an automatic transmission. When I first start driving in the morning or after long hours of sitting, my Honda struggles for power. Basically, it doesn't down shift when it should, so I have to go into D3 or even D2 to get power. Once the car warms up, it seems to run fine. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi -- came over to check this post out at your request. I see the kitty brigade is taking hold of the site!

OK: Trans slow to react when cold. Since it behaves when warm I'm going to blame the transmission fluid for now. If you haven't changed it it would probably get better by itself. Trans fluid is a strong solvent by itself so avoid snake oil treatments as it just may be tired fluid. Go for the best. I like synthetics. Some won't get all the fluid out without jumping thru hoops so just do fluid and filter that does come out and clean up the gray dust in the pan which will be there if you haven't done it in a while or ever -- some people don't and get away with it. Don't overfill it and measure what you got out as a gauge. Don't go nuts with gasket cement either and let it fully cure before bolting up a trans pan. Don't overtighten the bolts to the pan but rather warm it up and re-tighten in random order about screwdriver tight plus some.

Steel pans are more sensitive about that. The new fluid will slowly clean up any varnish that may be slowing down valve body parts that route fluid under pressure to make it shift.

I don't know of any adjustments to a Honda transmission but you might check on that or someone may jump in here who knows for sure.

It can be a messy job as most don't use drain plugs but just drop the pan,

T
