Dear Fellow Car Guys;
I hope someone can help me.
Just got on E-Bay a cheap 1987 Honda Civic CRX L4-1488cc 1.5 L engine w/ 3V Carb – 242K miles w/5speed Manual Transmission....bought over the internet, did not get to test drive the car because of time constraints….Engine is strong and the car runs great, except when you drive down the road no matter what gear you are in a loud grinding noise comes from what I have been able to determine is either the transaxle, or the axles. It is definitely not the brakes because when you apply them the noise does not go away...and the brake pedal feels strong not mushy....The transmission shifts fine, and there is no binding or any extra noise when you apply the clutch, I believe ruling that out. The noise continues even when you put the transmission in neutral and shut off the engine. The axles do not make any noise when you make a closed turn in either direction, making me think it is not the CVJoints...I have not been able to get the car up on Jacks as of yet to further check out the problem. Could this be a bad Ring and Pinion or one of the Bearings ? Have any of you out there experienced this problem? Would appreciate any input you can give me. Thank You. Motionking6996

Hoist two wheels at a time (fronts or backs - all four is fine too) and spin test them one by one by hand. So far I'm thinking wheel bearing but brakes can be a cause but usually make a significant change when applied or not,

Dear Tom;

Thank you for your response I will check it out and let you know, I hope it is a wheel bearing since the difficulty of repair and the cost would be less than a Differential Bearing.

Thank you again,
