1981 Wagoneer trans. stops working.

1981 Wagoneer trans. stops working. Sign In

1981 AMC Wagoneer. 360 V8, A.T. 148000 mi. My Wagoneer just started acting up today. I use it for light snow plowing in my own driveway. The second time I shifted into reverse today, the converter acted like it would not slip, and stepping on the brake in reverse caused the engine to stall. It has never done this before. But it appeared to work in forward gears. Within a couple minutes, it stopped moving completely. I checked the fluid( in neutral, engine running, car level) and it was proper level. I shut off the engine to further inspect. Couldn't find anything. Restarted and shifted into gear, and it moved out immediately. But 20 ft. later, it coasted to a stop. I repeated this several times with the same result. It does the same in reverse. I turn off the engine, wait for about a minute, and then restart. I shift into gear,(any gear) and it moves 20-30 ft. and then no more. I also tried it with the transfer case both in and out, with the same result. Is this a torque converter problem, or maybe the pump? Need some help before it snows againSmile. Thanks for any help.

You can test the pump by connecting a pressure gauge to the line pressure port on the transmission

It should have around 54-60 psi with the throttle closed and 57-94 psi at 1000 rpm. Monitor the line pressure when it doesn't want to move.
Since your plowing with it, the transmission does need a good fluid cooling system such as an external transmission cooler with good air flow through it.


Kind of strange for it to stall the engine only in reverse. If you have the A727, they did have a version with a lock up torque converter which could cause stalling much like a manual transmission when you don't push the clutch in. If there isn't enough fluid getting into the converter that could cause it to work fine for 20 ft and stop working. Not too familiar with that unit, but line pressure should be verified to see where you need to go with it.
