I have a 1999 ford escort with a 2.0 engine. I don't know. with 206,000 miles and I am finally changing my struts for the first time. my problem is that I changed the back struts and springs and on one side I can fit 4 fingers between my tire and the wheel well but the other side I can only fit 1 finger. what would cause this.

Do you have a broken or sagged out coil spring? Were these quick struts or did you have to take the struts apart and reuse the coils?

when I replaced the struts I replaced everything. the struts, the springs, the strut sleeve and the part that mounts to the car it self.

The question is, did you buy them all as one piece or assemble them yourself?

I put them together myself. the one that is acting up did feel different. it felt harder to compress the strut then the other 3 did but it did raise back up like the rest.

That's where I think your problem is. It was either a bad installation or wrong parts.
