power steering issue on astra vxr

Hi, the RAC fitted a new battery to my friends 10plate astra vxr. He got home and the next time he started the car the steering was extremely heavy. I checked the battery which is good, checked fuses and all was fine. Plugged kts into it and it said something about the code between key and car being implausible however when I tried to start the car again it was completely dead. The car went to the auto electricians and we are back to square one. Car now starts, steering still heavy but no fault codes. No leaks and levels are good. Alternator belt has slight play but given the pumps not belt driven shouldn't be the problem? I think it must be the pump and the timings just coincidental? Any advice greatly appreciated
