I paid 1200.00 in May of 2011 to have the ball joints done. The other day a different mechanic said that they need to be done, that the last job wasn't very good. How long do they last and can I take my truck back to first mechanic. I know that I will get another opinion. I don't drive crazy. I put about no more than 1,500 miles on since last ball joint job. 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 6 cyl 3.0L

You are having quite the spell of bad luck. You are saying it's only 1,500 miles since they were all fine? That's way too early and some if greased on schedule can last near forever. Second opinion time on this one,

Tom

What is wrong with the ball joints? Boots ripped, too much play, making noise? Is this mechanic working at a licensed and insured repair shop?

Make sure they use good quality ball joints if you plan on keeping your truck. Our shop has had good luck with MOOG suspension and steering parts. You may pay a little more for them, but in the long run are worth it.

Ditto - What's wrong with them?

Quote from top "I put about no more than 1,500 miles on since last ball joint job."

OK - did look them up, couple types depending on suspension springs if that info was right. Whole arms with the joints or just joints, prices varied greatly. Most showed a lifetime warranty! Not labor of course with that type thing or the required alignment.

All FOUR! I can't believe that so easily. Do you have paperwork on last job and the current estimate?

T
