First time driver asking about going to mechanics Sign In

Hiya,

First time driver and I recently bought a pretty beat up Peugeot 306 for 250 pounds. It makes a grinding noise while driving so wanted to get it checked out at a mechanics. I've never been to one before so I honestly don't know how to go about it. Can I just ask a mechanic/garage to identify the problem for me? I don't want them to fix it in case it's an expensive job in which case it wouldn't be worth it.

In other words, how do I go about getting a professional to identify a problem in the car without it costing me thousands?

Cheers in advance

You call the shop you would like to take it to and tell them that you would like to schedule an appointment to have your vehicle looked at.

When you get there, you tell them what your issue is and that you would like to have it diagnosed.

After they diagnose the issue, they should give you a written estimate for repair. They may find other things wrong that could be added to the estimate. From there you decide if you would like those things repaired or not. They will probably charge you a diagnostic fee of some sorts.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
