vent selection cable??? Sign In

hi guys. presently having a problem with my 2003 pontiac sunfire. 130000 miles. 2.2 l. the switch on the dash that selects which vent my heat will flow out of was stuck. upon investigation i found that the cable that runs from the back of that switch to the door lever under the dash is bent out of shape. i am able to reach under and manually switch, however the cable is shot. it wont flow through the little channel that it is attached to due to the bend in the cable.just wondering if anyone knows what this cable is called and who may carry it. doesnt look all that difficult to replace, just dont know what to call it when i call parts stores. also, have had a wierd knocking noise coming from near the blower motor for a little while now. it only knocks when the vent selection switch is in any position other than the recirculation position.somewhat annoying. usually just switch it to defrost for a moment to clear the windshield.thanx.

I'd call it and be wrong a vent selection cable but since you are looking right at it suggest going to a new car dealer and they should have a screen you can point to exactly what you quite apparently know you need. There will be a name and part # for it.

Just went thru that for a part and reduced to calling it a "thingy" but described location (phone call) and what it did. Not available and lucked out - found one used on that.

What concerns/interests me is why this cable got bent? If the selection door is jamming then it could happen again right away??

You'll have to go to the dealer and ask for a "mode control cable"

I hope you meant Hammer is the "Best." Just one suggestion with the replacement is to make sure it's lined up and not forcing a push/pull type cable against limits of the door it actuates or if can be installed at a wrong angle make sure it's a straight push pull.
My guess is this happened (a maybe) from some other work where it might have needed to be moved to do something else??
