My husband was changing the thermostat on my 1995 Mercury Villager. The bolt broke off the motor when he was tightening it. I guess it was on the housing. What can we do to fix that. My van only has 117000 miles on it so really need help.

Arggh! For now remove the t-stat cover and assess the situation. There may or may not be something left to grab and there are "stud" extractors that could help. If broken off flush I only know of drilling it out with exacting care to only be drilling the broken part for extraction.

This is tricky stuff and you stand the chance of making things worse with failed attempts. Depending on just what it looks like and the location you might do well to seek professional assistance with this,

Thanks for the tip but my husband said bolt did not break it's the ear that it screws into on the motor. We tried jb weld but it did not hold

Ok: That is more like it - I think! I believe you have broken the thermostat housing and those are replaceable. Check locally as common ones are available aftermarket and if no luck bring broken part to a dealer would verify getting the exact right one.

If what I'm thinking happened just know that the seal is made by clean gasket surfaces more than how tight the nut/bolt fasteners are. Yes - they need to be snug but as I'm known for saying - "They aren't holding the whole car together" type of tight so go easy. Good luck with the fix,

not the ear on the housing but the ear on the motor itself. I wish it had been on the housing. I could have easily replaced that.

Bummer! Not seeing just what and where there may be another replacable part short of a whole manifold. If not, get some help as it can almost certainly be fixed - guessing aluminum alloy of some sort and that's tricky by itself.

There are ways to affix parts like that again - a sideline of it's own sometimes. Motorcycle repair shops can be clever with stuff like that but at any rate ask a shop what or where they suggest. I just can't know just how it broke or what type of fix would last for you. The JB weld stuff is excellent but this isn't really the place for it.

My guess is you should get help with this for the best fix,

T
