low High Side, and High low Side Sign In

1993 Nissian D21 Hardbody
2.4L 4Cylinder with 115,000 miles
How is everyone doing ? I'm trying to get the ac working in this truck. I changed out all the orings,receiver drier, and a leaky low side hose. I put a 30 min vacuum on the system, and then closed the low and high side gauges on the ac manifold gauge. The system hold the vaccum, so after 10 minutes of watching the gauge, I started the car. The ac was put on max a/c. I hooked up a can of freon on the yellow supply line, and purged the line. I turned the low side manifold gauge to the open position. After poring one can of freon on the system the compressor never engaged the low side went up to 60, and the high side stayed at 0. I'm thinking of changing out the compressor and expansion valve. your advice is greatly appreciated.

What kind of system is this?12 or R134?

Did it empty the can?

Are you sure you have both service ports open?

This is an R134A system. The system was empty. After I put the can of freon, low side went from 60 to 100 psi. The high side stayed at 0 psi. It busted the line that connects the low side to the evaporator. I had the line that busted repaired, cause the dealer doesn't carry that line anymore.

When I was using the vacuum pump, I had open both the low and high side. During charging, I had the car running, and the ac on max with the high side closed, and the low side open.

There's something wrong with the info you are giving me. You didn't answer me about the can going empty. The fact that you read zero on the high side gauge means either that port was not open or the low side port was not open and none of that refrigerant went into the system at all. The pressure you are reading on the low gauge may be just from the gauges to to fitting and nothing in the system.

A 93 Nissan truck should've been originally R12...Sounds like you have converted it to R132a.... I am going to assume you installed both low and high 134 fittings.....1st thing you want to double check is your fittings.....Some of those fittings you would remove the factory schrader valves and the new fittings would have the schraders in them....Other ones you would use leave the factory schraders in and put the adapters right on top of them.....2nd if the 134 coupler isn't "clicked" on to the fitting all the way before you screw down the depressor, you won't get a pressure reading.....

AS HT has already eluded to.....you may have just pressurized your low side hose with 134 & no refrigerant has got into the system....So answering his question would be a big help as well

My data shows the trucks were all 134a for year 1993 but many could be part year - need to know that. Best to avoid the word "freon" which if not capital "F" just means "refrigerant." Capitol "F" it must be made by Dupont as a trademarked name.


Replacement parts if/when available could be sized for R-12 in 93, 94 maybe another year for capacities or less if made for 134a. This was a troublesome time as new vehicles were pre-converted used same R-12 parts and replacements should be soon for 134a - either can work but rubber products for only R-12 only would or could be different.
Know your equipment and the ports if Schraders are in the port or using the OE R-12 Schrader even if OE ports!


How was hose fixed? Barbs and clamps? Can't do that with 134a or it will leak but will hold a vacuum. Lots to take in for just model year 1993 and expect unknowns especially now for capacities,

No, this truck came with R134 originally.

I can't find exceptions - all 134a new. HT - anyone, Jan. 1st 1993 Nato compliant countries 100% ceased production of R-12. Just FYI info. However many models of cars and trucks just converted the R-12 components with "barrier" rubber but were not totally HE parts for 134a just using up the stock of parts.


Granted in very severe heat it wasn't going to be as effective but few noticed unless replacing a part later then you have a new capacity if just the part or those days of converting was all different than an OE known amount. It matters greatly as 134a is plain fussy to be correct vs most R-12 original set ups just makes it that much harder to get the most possible out of what you have and try hard to know that amount to the oz and mark that vehicle helps if back there again,

It doesn't matter for this truck because it's factory R134 so it is filled to stated capacity of 1.65 to 1.87 lb (US).(26.4oz to 30oz).

Yea that was right in the crossover years.....Some were R12 some were 134.....

From the OP's original post, my guess would be, he didn't get the couplers on the fittings right and just evac'd and charged his manifold set...Since the system never came on,,,,I would say the low side for sure....He might have got the high on right but with no refrigerant in the system, he wouldn't see any pressure on the high side......

You are correct on Freon Tom....It's a brand name for refrigerant that's become the normal......Kinda like Cresent or Vise grip....

I empted the hole can. I didn't convert the system from R12 to R134A. The ac system on the truck was already an R134a system.

The 1st thing you need to check out is the pressure readings you're getting......It's not possible to put 1 lb of refrigerant into the system and not get a static readings on both sides......Either you are hooked up wrong, have a bad gauge or something.......You say you put a whole can in the system, if it does have that much in the system then there is an electrical problem causing the system not to come on......But 1st you need to find out what's up with those pressures and why there is no high side reading, if in fact there is refrigerant in the system

When I looked at the evaporator core, it's plugged up with leaves, and debris. I will need a new evaporator core. I'm going to also change the expansion valve while im at it.

It doesn't appear you are listening to anything you are being told.

Until you resolve the issue with your gauge, nothing else matters.

 I have another manifold gauge I purchased. I will compare the pressures of both manifold gauges.

My advise.......Answer the pressure issue and the system not engaging 1st before tearing further into the system.....
