First of all, I took my 2006 RAV4 to the dealer to check a clicking noise I heard while turning. They stated they can't hear the noise and I took it back. This was on Saturday, January 20th. I did not drive the car at all on Sunday. Now on Monday, January 22nd, After driving a couple of miles, I noticed steam/smoke coming out of the right side of the hood. I went back home and went to the dealer. Along the way home the air conditioner stopped working. When I got to the dealer, I left my car there. A few hours later, I got a call from the dealer and they said I had a crack in my condenser and that it is physical damage and not covered by warranty. I can't see any sign of the car being hit from the outside. Our insurance also looked at it and were also unable to find anything. Currently I have told the dealer to fix it and am waiting for the part to arrive at the dealer. The estimated total is $1200.
Ok now my question: is there any way that the condenser can actually get from the outside of the car? I was driving on the highway so there is a possibility that something could have hit the car but not likely since it was only a few miles. (if you didn't notice, i think that the dealer might have done something. I was being a little skeptical to them when they said that they didn't hear a click noise)

The condensor is in front of the radiator. It is possible that a peble or something small could have piered the fins. But to crack it! You would have to hit something notciable. Where is the crack? On the fins or the tubes?
Don't forget the dealer will make more money if you pay the bill verses warrenty.

You must have quite a leak to makes it steam!! There should be oil evidence where it is leaking and stuff does happen either from vibtations or road debris.
Even though this happened so quickly it will be tough to prove if anyone is at fault, T

i'm not exactly sure where the crack is. I think its in the tube, but I can't physically see the crack. If i want the dealer to try and show me the crack ( I've tried), they want to charge me labor for taking it apart. Looks like im stuck with just replacing it and hoping that insurance will cover it.

You might not see the leak or crack. They could have sniffed it out with an electronic leak detector. Refrigerant are colorless and for the most parts odorless but they do carry oil thru the system, T

yeah, that's what i thought to. But the dealership said that it is not covered under warranty because they can see an impact on it, and that there's physical damage on it. If a pebble or something hit, wouldn't it only hit the visible part of the condenser that i can see from the outside?
