Toyota A/C trouble Sign In

I have a 1990 Toyota 4-runner,the a/c was worked on a little over a year ago.They replaced the a/c clutch and recharged with r-12 or so I was told.I recently had to replace the whole compressor and when I went to draw a vacum on it the fitting on the low side is a 134 connector.I assume they recharged it with 134a.My question is why would there be a 134 connector if they used r-12?Also should I remove the schrader valve when I do the vacum,I had to use an adapter to make the hose connection fit on the high pressure side.

Arrgh! Guess you don't know what's been in there now. They may have just filled it up with 134a but even if that works and probably does it doesn't tell you what oil is in there now dammit. Don't remove shraders for a vacuum. Hose connections should depress them and they will work. You can just vac from the low side - just take you time and let it sit in the vacuum for a while.

Are you going to use R-12 again? I think it would be more compatible with unknown oils right now or flush it all out and start overFrown

Thanks Tom,
The compressor and reciever/dryer do not have any oil in them at present time,only oil in system would be in the evaporater and condenser.Do you think that would be enough to cause a problem if I use 134 and pag oil?Also if I do use the 134 can't the oil be put in as an aerosol ?

This is a mess to understand the oil situation. I would pull a long held full vac and charge with 134a. Use perhaps 3oz of Ester which is available in cans that are 2oz oil and 2oz 134a. Measure in by weight about 70% of suggested charge for R-12 -- inch up an ounce at a time if performance is not up to par.

Tom, I want to thank you for all your help.I just finished up the 4-runner and its cooling great,42 degrees coming out of the vents with an outside temp of 86 degrees.I recharged it with 134 and the ester oil.Again thanks much.

Now I have to figure out whats wrong with the a/c in my 91 S-10,cools but not very good. Seems like its always something with these cars lol.You may be hearing from me again soon.

Let us know what it's doing and all the info and history as you did which really helped. Feel free to hit at WWW.autoACsystems.com or if that doesn't click it is clickable from the smaller print in the heat and AC issues spot we are at and others here know their A/C too - I'm not perfect and sometimes others have had lots of the same problem you may come up with which speeds up the diagnosis and repair,
