I have a 2004 Ford Taurus SES 6 cyl. 3.0L 182 FI () when I turn on the A/C it makes a very loud metallic noise with vibration on the passenger's side.Oh, by the way, the mileage is 91,321. Any ideas? Thanks.

Just quickly so you minimize possibly making more damage but be ready with hood open looking at the clutch of compressor. When off it should be still. When engaged it is turning the guts of the compressor. If slipping meaning can go slower than the belt that's a problem. If belt was too loose it would more likely make a squealing noise than a metallic noise. If compressor's internals are self destructing or somehow a serious overcharge could make problem but describing this as a metallic noise isn't good. Unless you are well informed on the situation and can rule out problems with belt or any pulley working harder because of compressor I'd unplug the compressor and safely wire tie (plastic ones) out of harm's way and let a pro listen to it to declare compressor or what before it could break the belt and render you a pedestrian! Thank you soooooo much! I also spoke to one of my male friends, and he also stated it sounded like the clutch! I am *NOT* a mechanic, but needed to hear from others that weren't going to benefit financially from my problem. As it is , sounds like its going to be expensive, but I least have an idea. Thanks so much, I really do appreciate your answer-sorry it took me so long to respond, I've had the flu for the past 5 days.

That could still be a very expensive job. If the compressor came apart internally, it would have contaminated the entire system with debris. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Cclooney - it seems more like the compressor which is only turning inside when clutch engages. If quiet and belt is in alignment the clutch can be just a pulley. As Hammer said and from the first post this compressor will be junk and expensive to fix if likely junk is not thrown thru system. Take the belt off and spin the clutch - engine off please. If no play and silent when spinning it then it should be ok to drive this disabled. No A/C till you decide what to do is better than no A/C and no car to use at all. If more than your budget to fix this and compressor is messed up both clutch and the body bushings they do sell dummy pulleys and brackets to eliminate the ones that must have a pulley there - some you can just get a belt for if car had no A/C from new. Couldn't say without looking. Dayco belts used to have the belt routing diagrams and I can't access that right now to even guess for you, T
