post locked   PLEASE HELP....A/C expert needed to answer this.....

1998 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
5.7 L
5,000 miles on a new engine

Thew A/C system on my car operates 100% perfectly, blows hard and its ice cold.

I have a factory 15" height x 28" wide x 1" thick condenser.

I want to know if I removed my factory condenser and replaced it with a condenser from a compact car that is about 15" x 15" x 1".....would it still remove enough heat to stay very cold?

I will also put a 2,600cfm continuously running fan attached to the condenser.

I see condensers on compact cars that are half the size of mine.....and these little 4 cylinder cars blow harder and are also ice cold. So I would assume it will work.....?????

I need to make room up in front of my engine for a custom turbo kit that is being installed.

Also, what type of condenser is best.

Thanks....

That is one of the worst ideas I ever heard.

NO, you cannot downsize the condenser and expect it to work. In those smaller cars, all the components are engineered to work together as a system. The condenser size is matched to the evaporator size and refrigerant capacity.

Easy answer: NO, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT.

Why: Condenser is so vital to A/C performance you'll never be happy again if you alter it especially if nice and OE now.

Please just say why you would even think of something like that? If you want more power just take all the A/C stuff out and do without but you are wrecking a car of great interest by messing it up either way,

I am installing a big single turbo kit to my car. It requires that the radiator get moved forward about 4 inches. Thats the easy part, takes 30 minutes to do it. But then the condensor has an issue fitting because of the trunk release cross bars.

A/C is a must...South East Florida is HOT in the summer..............This kit is designed to keep factory A/C. BUT, I am choosing to go with the biggest turbo that fits the kit and people are having a little trouble making it fit. There's about 50 cars like mine that are running this turbo kit with perfect results......I just want to use a little larger turbo.

All the other cars move the radiator and condenser forward just 1" and nothing really changes. They all have the same quality A/C as when they started. I just need 4" of room.

So I'm doing research into what else might work to save room.

?? What if I used two 15" x 15"x 1" condensors and put them together like a sandwich. So that would be more surface area than my factory condenser. Then with the 2,600cfm fan pushing air through them both. I can fit that in front of the radiator......?

OK...I was just figuring that if these tiny little 4 cylinder cars that have hurricane force winds coming from their vents and its ice cold......that the condenser is doing more than enough for me.

These little cars blow much more volume, much harder.....than my system does with my 8 cylinder.

I'm not going to waste a bunch of time debating this foolish idea. I've already advised you and I've already explained why those smaller cars blow cold with smaller condensers.

Not only do you want to destroy the condenser engineering but you want to put a superheated turbo against it.

You have received the same advice from 2 different AC experts. You don't appear to be listening so I'm just going to close this thread now.

PS, you claim to be in Southeast Florida but you IP shows you in Dubai.
