Can anyone help me?

The temperature gauge on my 99 Mercury Cougar has been acting erratic lately and I seem to be having problems diagnosing the cause. Sometimes the gauge doesn't move and everything is normal. Other times it will climb into the red zone and stay fixed in that area for quite sometime before releasing and falling back to the dead-center where it normally should be. I've also noticed at times my fans don't run unless the A/C is on. I took it to Midas and they were completely useless and told me they can't diagnose it until something goes wrong. What could be the cause/cure...simply replace the thermostat and see what happens? Is it possible the fan motors are shorting, or could it be a temperature sensor? What is your opinion?

If things are ok with A/C on then it points to the switch near thermostat that makes fans come on. Cheap and worth a try if that sounds like it. T

Un plug the "temp sender" and if the gauge falls that would be a good indicater that you have the right one. If putting A/C on quickly when it spikes drops with the fans running it MAY be that.

Do fans always work with A/C on? Is all normal with A/C on? Sorry to answer the question with questions. If the car is truely overheating don't wait to address this and hit back with what you find. T
