No air out vents, blower motor working 97 ford escort
|
|
|
1997 Ford Escort 2.0 170k miles. My wifes ac is coming out cold, but very very little. When I turn on the ac, i can hear the compressor kick on. I hear/see the radiator fan kick on. I can feel the blower motor under the dash turn on, but just to be sure, i undid the 3 screws and observed it turn on when I turned on the switch. I dont know what else to check, is there a damper somewhere that may be stuck?

Is the air coming out the defrost vents instead? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

why, yes it is, very well and cold, on ac, and defrost settings. I have never messed with the guts of the control panel before, a little skeered of where this is going,... does this mean a blockage or a vacuum hose fell off?

when I dropped the blower motor out, (those 3 screws kicked my butt, I am not a mechanic, smacked the bridge of my nose with the socket wrench while being upside down) there were 2 oak tree leaves. Not sure how i would be able to clean out the air ducts if its a blockage.

The mode selection is done through a series of air doors that are operated by vacuum. When there is either a partial or total loss of vacuum, the system will default to either defrost or on some vehicles, heat. Acceleration can also have an effect on the doors for the same reason. Look under the hood for a small black plastic hose coming through the firewall. Follow it to the vacuum source looking for any breaks, cracks or leaks. Also follow any other lines that branch off because they may go to a vacuum reservoir (storage tank) and a leak there will cause the same problem. Using a vacuum gauge to determine if you have full vacuum at any given point is the best way to find it. You can cut into the line anywhere and splice it back together with a piece of vacuum hose. Find the broken line, you found your problem.

I just wanted to follow up, that I checked under the hood about an hour ago, when my wife came home from work. Looking around one of the ac freon lines, I found a black vacuum hose that had sheared off just before it went into a rubber boot. I took off the rubber boot, had a little help getting the broken piece out of the boot, put it back on the freon line and placed the rubber vacuum hose into the boot. Bam~! Ac worked again, how lucky am I that someone answered me on a forum i've never been on before, and for the break to be in view under the hood? Thank you very much again. Repair cost = 0.

I think this may be my problem as well. Can hear the blower and feel air out the defroster. I just had my alternator bite the dust and when I picked up the car from the repair shop, the vents didn't work. Before I ask the shop about it, I figured I'd look up the issue in case it was just an easy fix. I'll be looking at it tonight to see what I can do as the heat is pretty intense right now. No response needed, I just wanted to thank you guys out there for identifying a solution for everyone so clearly. Cheers
