Looking for advice. I brought my Jeep in a week ago bc A.C was not getting cold told mechanic I could hear a weird hissing noise and thought there might be a leak. Tests were ran and refrigerant was filled and cost me around $400 I don’t have receipt I’m front of me but maybe a few bucks more. No mention of a leak and it was getting called so
I was like cool! Paid And was on my way. On my way home I did hear a bit of hiss but it was cold so i was fine with it. Well after a couple of days the it stopped getting cold again and the periodic hissing was back. I bring it back in and come to find out the compressor has a leak and needs to be replaced as well as the refrigerant that leaked out. So my question is should I have to pay for the refrigerant again that leaked out bc they missed the leak the 1st time? They told me that I won’t be charged for the test again bc the test was under “warrantee” But if I was charged for this test the first time and they actually ran test (I assume they’re referring to dye test) the 1st time shouldn’t it have caught? I received an estimate of $850 for the the part, labor and to fill refrigerant again . How much estimated of that cost is to fill the refrigerant

Forget the hissing noise. It has nothing to do with the refrigerant leak. Any leak severe enough to hear would empty the system in 10 minutes.

The only thing I would question about the situation is you being charged for a leak test the first time. He would have put the dye in the system at that time so there would be no dye leakage found yet. The system has to be run long enough for the dye to leak out so it can be found on the next trip.

YOU DID NOT HEAR IT LEAK! Too little in system would be oil all over area if that fast?

Just check any pressure if zero a total loss say so let's find where. ZERO is easy to find,

The hissing you hear inside is due to a partial refrigerant expansion due to a decreased charge. Our experience with 2015 and newer Grand Cherokees that use the new R1234yf refrigerant are SERVICE PORTS (where gauge couples are connected to the system). We've replaced 2 or 3 condensers on those models so far this year. That refrigerant is very expensive, so they (shop) better be equipped to handle it. It is their responsability to check PERFECTLY for leaks before charging refrigerant, specially that one. Leaky condensers are evidenced by a large oily spot on the driver side, right below the transmission cooling coil. I hope this helps
