It needs to be about 1/4 up from the bottom when installed.

Place the thermister as HT stated and see if that helps...

This kinda reminds me of a job I had years ago. It was well over 20 years ago so I'm fuzzy on a lot of the details but if you still have a problem it would be worth checking out..

I had just started at a shop and one of the writers came up to me and said he had a 93 Toyota p/u that cooled great except when he was sitting a light or wherever, then the a/c would get warmer the longer he sat.. Right off the bat you would think it was a cooling problem but the guys at the shop had already replace the fan clutch & condenser.. I found an adjuster on the amplifier which I turned down, it kept the comp on longer at idle and would cool. This was his work truck, so it just went back & forth to work & around town, never on any long distance trips.

I was working flat rate and this one was for free so I wasn't going to spend a ton of time researching this system. The adjustment worked, there was no freezing problem so we were good. He drove that truck for a few more years until his brother totaled it...

I'm thinking if yours has the same adjuster and some one dialed it down, this might be keeping the comp on too long and on long trips, possibly cause the evap to freeze?

Thanks for the input, There is little on the switch you are referring too even in the FSM, it is part of the AC amplifier. As near as I can glean from the internet it has more to do when at idle than when driving, Not sure if it shuts off the compressor at idle or increases idle speed so as not to stall or lug engine.

Hammer Time had one of these pickups so if it was that simple I am sure he would have caught it.

I am still trying to figure out how to get to the thermister without evacuating the system and removing the cooling unit.

If it's on the blower side of the evap you can access it by removing the blower motor but if it's on the other side, the case will have to come out.

Had the system evacuated, tech said that I had 16oz of refrigerent in the system and said his chart calls for 19.75 of 134a. FSM calls for 1.5-1.8 lbs of R12. 65% of that is 15.6 oz to 18.72 oz.

Tech seemed ok and not out to pick my pocket so will take it back there to get recharged. Told me $65 to evacuate and recharge, which seems more than fair.

Took a picture of thermister on evaporator, does this seem ok? Of course it was on opposite side of blower so unit had to come out!!

Will I have to add oil for recharge, I have the PAG 46 with dye and would like to use the same oil. So 1 oz same as last time I had this evacuated.

This time I cannot get the photo or link to post?? Maybe now? http://autoforums.carjunky.com/upload/IMG_0001.JPG

The right way to determine oil amount is to measure how much his machine removed.

Took Toyota back for charging 3 days ago. I did not interject anything simply told them what I did and why then let them do their job. Tech said that 20oz of 134a was put in and that dash temp was 50.

Took the RV for a ride today, 92° ambient, but did not get the humidity. Driving 50 mph about 4 mi to gas station I was getting about 60° out of center of dash. 20 mile drive at 65mph on interstate best temp I saw was 55° returning home same route still at 92°, the best dash temp I saw on way home was 48°. No sign of freezing.

Sounds like it's fixed. Can we close this now?

Everything seems to be working and not freezing up. It is cooler now so not sure if this is a good test or not?

One thing I do not understand, I have a 2008 Ford Ranger, the AC in it has never been serviced and the dash temperature runs just above 40°, but I should be happy with the 50° in the RV... Is there a simple explanation for this?

Thanks for all the help it is greatly appreciated.

Can't compare the two if just heat invasion much more apt by age if it's working it's best not much is practical to totally change that now,

Yes, first, they were not engineered or made by the same company, second, a Ranger probably has a lot let space to cool.

The other thing is the Ranger is an orifice tube system and the Toyota should be expansion valve. Totally different animals.
