I don't understand this symptom Sign In

Hi All, from a newbie to this forum.

My AC us not putting out cool air. I tried to add freon but it didn't seem to go into the system. I have a home gauge and connector hose as well as a manifold gauge set. but neither one will add freon to the system.

I see that the low side gauge goes full scale while the high side goes to about 250 psi. I think that the compressor is running.

I have some skills and tools in this field, but you might as well call me a novice.

Please give me a few clues on how to make this system run. Thanks, Jim

You can't simply add refrigerant to a system when you don't know how much is in there now. Refrigeration is a complicated thing to understand and not for the novice.

The amount of charge has to be precise, not too much, not too little or you can cause damage either way. The very first thing that needs to be done here is to completely evacuate and recharge the system with the exact specified weight of charge. Then and only then will the pressures mean anything at all.

I suggest you have this professionally evacuated and recharged and then diagnosed.

Ditto: Many of these take SOOOOO little "refrigerant" (Freon) it's just too easy to go over. You or the right shop with a clue, have to at least vacuum it all out and charge to exact amount and know it then the issue can be found.
So far your pressures at idle are way too high, low shouldn't spike and you do that with a raised idle or pressure guessing is going to wreck this,

Thanks Hammer and Tom, as I said, I am a novice so I appreciate your information. I didn't know that it was necessary to purge the system. I do know how to do that and I have a vacuum pump and I just got the specs. from the label under the hood. So I'll let you know how it goes.

Good luck. As said you need a baseline starting point of knowing it's properly charged - BTW most will just work properly so note how long it behaved as "leaks" still the #1 reason for failures could go an hour, day or year there's nothing more to dig into till you know it's plain charged to spec then if a problem the other zillion things that go wrong let's not go there you may not have anything else??

Once you get it properly charged, if it still isn't cold, don't mess with the charge. Take high and low pressure readings and post them here.

Pay attention to whether the cooling fans are working.
