Heater Core replacement? Sign In

My son was told he probably needs a heater core.(car overheating) He has a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am V6.
He just would like a ball park figure approx what this will cost to have it replaced. He has no mechanical skills to try it himself.
We know the labor will be the biggest part of the bill, but 300?500?700?
Trying to see if it's worth fixing.

Thank you for any help.

Unless it's leaking onto floor in car why do you think it needs a heater core? Overheating could be lots of things. The core might be part of the by-pass system of the cooling system and if plugged could effect engine temp.

If not leaking and with cooling system known full - at radiator not just a recovery tank and it can blow heat this isn't causing it to overheat.

I don't know the labor time for this car but I would make sure it needs a heater core first. It's not always so easy to purge cooling system of air to test out the cooling system in general.

Note: A good heater core won't throw heat if coolant is low enough or if the car is overheating it would have hot air boiling thru it which doesn't exchange heat even close to hot water (coolant) in the core,
