Heater Broken / Overheating Sign In

Vehicle : 1993 Nissan Pick-up truck
Miles: 190,000

Okay, so my truck has been overheating and I have replaced my thermostat, waterpump, fanclutch, and radiator. I even hooked up a hose to all my different parts of my trucks cooling system to make sure there was correct circulation (ex. hose to the heater core). I have used a flush system to clean out my cooling system, no help.

The only thing that I can say is that my heater doesnt work,(most of the time). A/C works great(untill overheating).

So what could be the problem?Unsure

Thanks!

Re: Heater Broken / Overheating Sign In

With everything that you have done I think the next thing would be to have someone or yourself do a block test on the engine.
It only takes a couple of minutes to do the test and it will tell you whether there is any combustion gases in the cooling system.
If there is then you may have a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head.
The tester kit is available at most parts suppliers and I think it’s less then $50. to buy.
Here’s a couple of pictures of what some styles of kits looks like. The liquid that you pour into the tester starts out blue and if it turns even the slightest yellow once you’ve drawn the fumes from the rad through it, you’ve got some form of combustion chamber leak.

Re: Heater Broken / Overheating Sign In

As Dan showed with graphics, I will add that your heater will NOT throw out heat when you have air/exhaust gases, or just bubbles from boiling over! It sounds strange but heaters quit when you overheat enough. That and the potential damage to your engine means this should be taken care of yesterday!! I'll go one step further and say change your oil a couple times early after you're fixed up. - T
