Did my dad overreact at the auto repair shop? Sign In

I have a 2004 camry and when I turned the engine on today, there was a big whirling sound. When my dad came back from work, we went to an auto repair shop to ask what the problem was. The owner said it's my alternator. My dad asked him how much and he said, $250. My dad asked if he accepts debit and the owner says there will be tax with the debit. So my sister drove to the auto shop with cash so we didn't have to pay for the tax. My dad knows about the prices and how some shops overcharge the prices. My dad wanted our old alternator after they took it out, but they refused. My dad got really mad because he know they were going to sell the old alternator to get the new one and then overcharge us. they got into an argument. then after they fixed it, the owner took my keys because he thought we werent going to pay. inside the office, my dad asked for the key while he was paying, and the owner yelled saying after you pay. i got angry as well saying do not worry, u will get ur money. he then got really fresh with my dad and i got mad. i asked him calmly, didnt u just open this shop? because he just recently opened the shop to a new location. we just left without saying thank you. did my dad overreact???????

My advice is you need to leave your dad home next time because he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. Alternators are remanufactured items and all remanufactured items are exchange prices because the supplier charged the shop a large deposit on the old part until they get it back. He was also way out of line to expect any shop to give him back his keys without paying, especially if the customer is disputing anything. I might do it for regular customers that i trust but certainly not to someone that is challenging everything I tell him.
