Car overheats/poor gas mileage when ac is on

Hi Tom,
My '98 Mazda 626 is overheating when I use the AC. It happens when I'm in stop and go traffic. It doesn't seem to happen when I'm on the highway. The engine temperature will gradually rise and the AC starts blowing warm air. At that point I'll turn off the AC switch and run the heater to cool down the engine. Also, I'm getting significantly lower gas milage now that it's summer and I'm using the AC a lot. Any advice is greatly appreciated...thanks.
