Air con experts opinion required.! Sign In

2012
Ford Mondeo
1.6 econetic

I brought this car 6 months ago and realised the Air Conditioning was not blowing cold. I took the car to the dealer and they claimed that system was over pressured at 800kg. They drained the system and re charged it to the required pressure of 500kg. I received the car back and soon realised the air con was still not blowing cold.

I took the car back and they then told me that the system has a hole in the condenser. They then wanted me to pay for the repairs telling me the hole has appeared since I purchased the car.

My question to the experts... is there anyway that the hole could have been there before I brought the car if what they told me about the de gassing and re gassing is true?

It sounds like you aren't getting good information from them. You don't charge AC systems by pressure, you do it by weight of refrigerant. The refrigerant in a closed system creates pressure. If you had a hole in the condenser to start with, you wouldn't have any pressure at all because the refrigerant would have all leaked out. I think you need to get a second opinion from a different dealership or take the service writer to task to explain this to you.

The hole could have been made at any time. The condenser is out in front of the car so anything can fly up from the road and puncture it. It could also have been there already. There is no way to know but the whole story is not adding up. If it was overcharged in the first place, that would mean it was holding refrigerant and likely didn't have a big leak. Unless you get a second opinion, no one can know what is truth and what isn't.
