AC cycles off and on Sign In

I have a 1998 Isuzu Trooper. AC cycles off and on. Goes off during idle but comes back on when I rev the engine. Had the freon checked and it's fine. What could this be?

Air cold coming out of the vents? If you have a thermometer, what temp is the air coming out of the center vents when the compressor cycles?

Re: AC cycles off and on Sign In

This truck has an expansion valve so it's not a cycling system so this isn't a normal action. The fact that it drops out at idle and engages under throttle gives the indication that it's a weak clutch and engages when the alternator bumps up the voltage off idle. Some might suggest the air gap being too wide but I don't believe the way this is acting would indicate that because it wouldn't disengage once engaged. You're probably going to have to replace the compressor and dryer.

Good catch HT. Wasn't thinking about that.
