AC causing huge drop in rpms Sign In

1991 honda accord 2.2L with 180,000 miles 80,000 on ac parts.

Ok so heres the deal, I had a major leak in the compressor and condensor, so I went and replaced both parts with used. Now my pressures are good and in normal area, 30 low and 220 high at 80F and I get 35F out of the vents. But when I first turn on the ac the rpms drop from 1500 cold to 500, so I turn off the ac wait a little and turn it back on and it runs fine after, but I smell something burning which I think is the compressor clutch. The smell goes away after about a minute.

So would the clutch cause this erratic issue, or is it something else. Could the compressor be hydrolocked or something.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Not if the pressures remain where you say they are during this problem. Do they?

I actually don't know but it only does it when the car has sat so the pressures aren't up anyways, but the first time I start the car I don't even think the compressor turns, because when it first started the compressor wouldn't turn at all and the belt just slipped over the pulley. Could the compressor be on its last leg?

You gotta know what the pressures are at that moment to know what's going on but you have some real serious issues. If that compressor isn't junk yet, it will be real soon.

So what should I do as of right now? If I can repucate the issue and get pressures I will.

It makes no sense that it only does it when its not run for a while. What if there is too much oil in the system, will it fill the compressor and not allow it to spin right until it circualtes.

Any ideas would be nice, Thanks for your replys.

Cars go to the junkyard for one reason, they are junk. You rolled the dice on used garbage instead of buying new. Let the buyer beware. New stuff costs money because it has to hold up to extreme temperature and pressure. Any small leak and soon its game over. So do the tests HT tells you to and follow proper advice this time. You may have been better off leaving the ac alone before as the cost to do it right isn't cheap. The cost to repair a cobble job of scrap parts is worse.
