Hi everyone, first post here, so I apologize in advance since I don't know the etiquette. Further apologies for being a car-noob. I only really know about cars what I've learned when needing to get them fixed.

I have a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 (Sedan), and my AC is acting up.

It blows cool air when I start it, and if my engine is working hard, i.e on the freeway.

It blows hot air if I am idling for a bit or driving around town.

I've tried to look into it, and my first thought was that the compressor is going bad, that it is giving up during the hot air times, or perhaps the belt is slipping.

My approach was going to be: leave the car on and let it idle, watching the compressor to see if it is going, and see if it stops during the hot air times.

What do you folks think?

Diagnosing AC issues is not a DIY type job. It requires extensive knowledge of how refrigeration works to be able to recognize the issues. You need pressure readings for both high and low and you need to know exactly how much refrigerant is in the system and they only way to do that is to do a complete evacuate and recharge with the exact specified charge. The one thing you can check is to make sure the cooling fan is working and pulling sufficient air.
