A/C shuts down the engine!! help!!

Hi, I have a 1995 Mazda Protege, and starting just recently, whenever I turn on the A/C, I hear a whooshing noise and then the engine stalls to a shutdown. Anyone have an idea what to do?? Thanks.

Compressor is probably locking up. If nobody has overcharged it lately it's a problem and you should disable it from coming on for now and when you get a chance just enable it while watching the compressor and belt as it's probably really struggling. It may be too late for a cheap fix for this but you don't want it any worse than it is now,
