A/C compressor goes on/off every few seconds

1997 Mercury Mystique 2.0 - 4cyl. auto w/ 124,000. Last year the A/C started getting warmer and warmer. Winter was near...didn't worry about it. Summer came...got worried about it. Purchased a can of E-Z Chill R134a and installed as instructed on can. As I was putting in the R134a the compressor started working (I thought) then I realized it was only coming on for 3-4 seconds then off again. Double checked pressure on R134a and it was right where the can indicates it should be. Compressor just keeps cycling on/off. Burning up in Milwaukee...please help. Thanks.

That could be still low on refrigerant or it could be a restriction in the system or even a bad cycling switch. The system needs to be completely recovered and then recharged with the exact specified weight of refrigerant.
