A/C clutch prevents truck from starting Sign In

1997 Ford F-150, 4.6 V-8, 102K miles.

A/C compressor clutch not engaging. I unplugged the clutch harness from the clutch to check for voltage to the clutch, and the truck would not start. I re-connected the wire and the truck started as normal. With the truck running, I disconnected the clutch wire again, and the truck died.
What could possibly cause these un-related incidents?

Are you sure it's the clutch wire that you're disconnecting?

Probably unplugging the crank sensor.

The wire is on the compressor, directly behind the pully that drives the clutch.

What color are the wires on the connector your unplugging?

It's really easy to mistaken the crank sensor connector for being the compressor clutch connector. The compressor clutch is right next to the crank sensor.

It has to be the Crank sensor. It certainly not the A/C compressor doing that.

I'll verify tomorrow..you have me convinced it must be the crank sensor, but then what is most likely causing the clutch to not engage? The refrigerant chage is OK.

That could be dozens of things. You will have to follow a wiring diagram to determine the cause.

The most likely reason for clutch NOT to engage would be low - VERY low charge but also a whole list of reasons as well. You don't know if there's enough refrigerant - you can't without removing it and weighing it. No silly on can pressure, color chart sold in the same stores with with the crayons is going to tell you how much which is what I'm guessing.

Other popular reason is clutch air gap too large. Try a common biz card in the gap or check for close to .020 gap. A card folded shouldn't fall out - all that without tools.

If it does (folded biz card) with A/C in request (with all caution!!!!) tap on outer plate and if it kicks on the air gap is too large to pull in on it's own.

I'm worried as if you are disconnecting a crank sensor and not the plug to clutch coil you should probably send this out before something gets destroyed,

T
