Compressor works fine, but is leaking around its body seams. I will swap out from a unit purchased at a salvage yard. Any important hints? Anyone know for sure the compressor mfg. and model#? I am fairly sure it is a Harrison, which specifies PAG 150. My concern is oil. Should I remove what is in it now? Or, just add? 4 oz. total? Should I pour it in while the compressor is off, or send it in via the low side port once it is all back together? Thanks in advance.

I would dump out the new one and add 3-4 oz directly into the compressor.

This should take a V7 which would have a crankcase plug which is where the oil is drained and filled from.

Well, Ghandi didn't fix cars so I won't be taking any of his advice.

If you buy a used compressor, you are choosing to gamble, and your odds aren't real good.

Thanks Hammer! I truly respect you! My dear old Dad said ' if your gonna do it, do it once" which makes perfect sense. My problem comes down to dollars. Sure Pro Shops are expensive, but they do have investments: education, tools, materials, payroll, rent, insurance.....and the list goes on. I am a retired professional in another industry, so I cannot begrudge a man his honest wage. Since my Dad also taught me how to turn a wrench, I have choices....a pro shop AC repair for hundreds? a reman compressor from Auto Zone? or a pick your own for $35 plus another $25 parts. If the pick your own goes bad the yard will stand by it. Im out $25 in materials and MY OWN LABOR.

I know and deal with some top auto mech who love me enough to give me some good advise, just like you. it is no surprise to me when their advise includes: "get one from a junkyard"
why? it comes down to dollars, when another man treats my dollars like his dollars.....then that is real professionalism!!!!

Blessed to have choices, and blessed to communicate with everyone at Car Junky! God Bless everyone.....work safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOU

When you go to the salvage yard to pick out your compressor ask them if the warranty includes cost of replacing the accumulator, orifice, condenser, and ac flush if the compressor happens to grenade and chuck a bunch of metal into the system.

Wise old man I knew a long time ago told me, " You get what you pay for."

I also appreciate your excellent advice, Discrete......I once found a newly installed reman in a Chevy Corsica which was totaled from behind, and looked like it was well maintained. On this job I splurged and had it charged by a local AC shop. Drove that car for years afterwards without AC problems or recharges....then I gave it away to a friend in need, and that 91 Chevy is still going! Of course your points are valid, as well as the fact that the original factory installed compressor failed without ending the world, as we know it.

My faith sustains me, and allows me to enjoy a positive outlook. Doing my own auto mechanics began out of necessity as a teenager, but today it is truly more of an enjoyable hobby.

It is not only the valuable information I receive at Car Junky, but the hope.

God Bless everyone! Work safe.

LOU

Reman compressors are less reliable than used ones.
