99 GMC Jimmy HVAC problems Sign In

I have a 99 GMC jimmy 4.3 SLT. I have noticed a weird noise around the HVAC controls ash tray area. It sounds like a motor trying to engage or something mechanical. A friend told me the a/c ventilation door under there is stuck open and trying to close. I had a slow leak on my compressor and have been driving with no a/c for about a month. I can feel hot air on my feet and coming out of the vents even with all a/c controls and fan options turned off.

One of the electric air door actuators is stripped, probably the temp door.

Thanks, would this be something in haynes or chiltons manual. I really can't afford to take it anywhere is this something I could take care of?

It's just a couple screws and a wire plug but the big issue is whether you can access it or not. Some of them require removing the dash and some are readily accessible. You need to find out which one it is first.

You need to first figure out which one it is.

Do you have an auto temp system or manual?

The defrost and mode actuators are vacuum so it has to be the temp blend door actuator. The dash does have to be removed to access it. You can probably see it if you remove the glove box.

The electric actuator (temperature) is located on the top right hand side of the heater/vent module.

Would this malfunction drain my battery while my trucks off? Just recently my battery went dead and assumed this noise had something to do with it but only hearing while the power is on leads me to believe it has nothing to due with draining my battery.

It shouldn't but but it is possible. Did you recently disconnect the battery for any reason.

No I did how ever recently punch my radio, stupid move I know, it was an aftermarket kenwood that came with it and the screen was broke you would have to apply pressure to change the station or adjust the volume then let go and it would stay on. My friend and I had it out the other day and didn't notice any loose wires and everything still works.

Re: 99 GMC Jimmy HVAC problems Sign In

Well, that stunt could be your battery drain but didn't affect the A/C.

There is a procedure for finding a battery draw like that.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 10 minutes to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.
