98 Cavalier Thermostat Temp? Sign In

I have a '98 Cav with what seems to be a 2.2L OHV or 2200 OHV Engine. (VIN Engine Code is 4)

I wanted to replace the stat and am having difficulty. Advance sold me a 180 degree and said that was the OE Temp. Haynes manual says it should be 195. I believe my owners manual also says 180, but the car seems to warm up more slowly than before the switch.

Can anyone confirm that I need a 195 or 192 degree stat? Maybe someone has a real shop manual, or has friends at a dealership? Advance and NAPA both said they didn't even carry that temp for this car, although AutoZone has both.

The old one which may be original whould be marked. 192 or 195 sounds right for most cars. 180 could cause problems with engine controls so you really want the right one, T

I checked the old one today. and it turns out the old one was 180 as well. I'm thinking about trying the 195 and see how it runs. Despite taking forever to heat up, it also seems to run hot if i'm parked for any length of time, so i'm thinking the lower temp stat might be keeping the cooling fan from kicking on.

There are no cars I know of even close to that vintage that really used 180 as original. Some people think they can make a car that may overheat do better with a lower temp thermostat.

They sell 160s and they should only be used for perhaps marine use.

They are all wide open when at their temp so you can't fix a problem that way.

Keep at it, T
